"The entire program was a very positive experience and I thought the swimmers with disabilities were included unusually well. I was impressed with the level of involvement of the Olympic and Paralympic stars."

DENVER ‹ Practice lanes were at a premium during the noon hour Wednesday at the University of Denver's El Pomar Natatorium, so Michael Phelps had to share.
His lane partner was impressed but not intimidated. She's one of the few to outdo Phelps in the pool.
Erin Popovich won seven gold medals in the Paralympics last summer in Athens, to Phelps' six in the Olympics. They met last June at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, but their participation in a "Swim with the Stars" camp Wednesday marked the first time they have seen each other since Athens.
Ian Crocker, another U.S. swimmer at the camp, pointed out to Phelps that Popovich one-upped him, but Popovich didn't use the opportunity to trash talk.
"She should have," Phelps said.
Phelps came up one short of matching Mark Spitz's 1972 gold medal haul. But Popovich, a dwarf, went 7-for-7 in five individual events and two relays.
"It's definitely something that goes through my mind a lot, but at the same time, it's like all right, I did that in 2004. Let's see what I can do the next go-round," said Popovich, who, like Phelps, plans to compete in the 2008 Games.
In 2003, Popovich swam with the varsity team at Colorado State University, where she is majoring in health and exercise science. She gave up her NCAA eligibility to cash in on her Paralympics feats, but she still trains with Colorado State.
She shared a message Wednesday she learned long ago with the more than 100 kids at the camp, which was organized by Octagon, the agency that represents Phelps.
"Who cares if you're in a wheelchair, who cares if you're shorter than everybody else, who cares if you don't have an arm? You're still just as functional and just as able as the person next to you," she said.
She and Phelps found out Wednesday they share more than golden success in the pool. Popovich turns 20 next Wednesday; Phelps turns 20 a day later.
After she won her third gold in Athens, Popovich started seeing references to her as "the Paralympic Phelps."
If Phelps wins seven in Beijing, she could pin a moniker on him: "the Olympic Popovich."
"Seven gold medals," Phelps said, "is pretty special."
